BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF

Money can be stressful, so it’s important to realize how normal and natural it is to feel overwhelmed when first navigating a new financial system. It's helpful to be gentle with yourself and find easy ways to calm your nervous system before and after making important financial decisions. Helpful activities include spending time in nature, having a warm shower or bath, making some extra space in your schedule for quiet time, or keeping a journal to write out your feelings. All these tools can support you in feeling calm and in control while navigating your new country and finances.

Building financial confidence is something that happens slowly, by taking small positive steps and rewarding yourself for each important milestone achieved. Canada is known to be safe and friendly, but we get a lot of fake phone calls, emails, and text messages. Don’t be surprised if the message is in your home language either. Here are some tips that you can follow to feel more confident when it comes to protecting yourself from falling victim to fraud/ scams in Canada.

PROTECTING YOURSELF AS YOU NAVIGATE YOUR NEW LIFE IN CANADA

1. STOP:

Don’t feel pressured into taking action if you receive a request for personal information that you weren’t expecting – make it a habit to stop and think rather than quickly respond. Our surveys show that phone calls, emails and texts asking for personal information are the most prevalent. With so much of Canadians’ lives now online, combined with feeling isolated and vulnerable in a new country without a strong support network, it’s particularly important to take a moment to stop, breathe, think, and follow your instincts.

2. SCRUTINIZE:

Assess the situation and look for the telltale signs of a scam. Make use of online resources like the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to stay up to date on scams and how to spot them.

3. SPEAK UP:

Confirm the validity and report any concerns. Recognize that you are not alone. There are resources that can help you recognize and respond to fraud attempts. If you suspect fraud, contact the sender of the communication through a different channel to verify it’s real. If you’ve already provided sensitive information, immediately contact your financial service provider and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

4. PRACTICE GOOD DIGITAL HYGIENE:

Be smart with your personal data. Whether it’s using a public Wi-Fi network to access online banking or refusing to change your passwords for fear of forgetting them, poor digital hygiene will often leave you in a mess. Be mindful about the networks you use and protect personal data by not disclosing too much public information on open social media platforms.

5. BLOCK SENDER:

Stop untrusted scammers in their tracks. If you experience unsolicited calls, emails, texts, or social media requests, don’t just ignore them, block them. This is an important way to stay protected and a useful tool to separate the good from the scam.
